When is Chinese New Year 2027?

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February. It is the first day of the lunar calendar and opens the year of the Goat (also called the Sheep). The date moves every year, between 21 January and 20 February. Celebrations last fifteen days, until the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February 2027: flowers given during that time are still a New Year gift. Vietnamese Tết and Korean Seollal usually fall on the same day.

Which flowers to give for Lunar New Year

The traditional flowers are those of late winter: plum and peach blossom, signs of renewal; narcissus, grown to bloom on the first day of the year; the orchid, a sign of refinement; and the peony, a symbol of wealth. A potted kumquat often completes the table. Hanaé does not sell plum branches or kumquat trees: a potted orchid or a bouquet in the festival’s colours carries the same message.

Which colours bring luck?

Red is the colour of the New Year: it brings luck and keeps bad fortune away, hence the red lanterns and red envelopes. Yellow and gold stand for prosperity, orange for abundance: in Chinese, the word for kumquat contains the word for « gold ». Hot pink and fuchsia, close to red, work too. A red and gold bouquet is always right.

Which flowers to avoid for Chinese New Year?

White is the colour of mourning in Chinese tradition, as is the chrysanthemum, which in France is also kept for cemeteries: avoid both. The number 4 sounds almost like the word for « death » in Chinese, so no bouquet of four stems. Eight, which suggests prosperity, is sought after, and even numbers are preferred, the opposite of the French habit of odd numbers. If you do not know the family’s customs, a red or yellow bouquet with no white flowers is a safe choice.

An orchid or a bouquet?

A potted orchid is a classic New Year gift: it blooms for several weeks, with no vase or water to change, and lasts through the whole festival. A bouquet makes more of an impression on the day, on the family dinner table. For a host who invites you to dinner, a bouquet; for family you will not see, an orchid that will last. A bouquet keeps longer if you trim the stems and change the water every two days.

Which wishes to write on the card

The most common wishes are « Happy New Year » and « Health and prosperity ». In Mandarin, « Xīnnián kuàilè » (happy new year) or « Gōngxǐ fācái » (prosperity); in Vietnamese, « Chúc mừng năm mới ». Write them in Latin letters rather than characters: the card, included, is copied out by hand, up to 400 characters. Sign with your first name so the family knows who sent the flowers.
